We are glad you are here.
1065 Fourth Street at Webster Avenue, Muskegon, MI 49440
All are welcome and invited to attend our one-hour service that begins each Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. Christian Science services have two individuals read a sermon that is made up from passages in the King James version of The Bible and the Christian Science textbook Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of this church. Thus, the congregation is listening to God’s word rather than personal preaching and it is a universal sermon that is heard in all Christian Science churches and societies worldwide.
For children, young adults, and visitors up to the age of 20 is held at the same time. Through the study of the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, and the Lord’s Prayer, students learn about their relationship to our loving God. Child-care is available for those too young for Sunday School.
Every Wednesday we have a one-hour testimony meeting that begins at 7 p.m. A brief lesson is prepared on a current topic once again using citations from The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Afterwards members and visitors share healings and ideas that they have learned from the study of Christian Science.
All are welcome to visit and use the Reading Room located in the church building at 1065 Fourth Street at Webster Avenue, across the street from Hackley Park. A Reading Room is a quiet place where one can pray, study, and/or ask questions about Christian Science. It is also a bookstore where Bibles, works by Mary Baker Eddy and others, music, and Christian Science literature, including the award winning, Christian Science Monitor, are available for purchase. Hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Saturday from noon until 2 p.m.
Christian Science in Muskegon began with a dramatic healing in 1884 of Dudley Tillotson, a salesman in his mid-thirties who had suffered illness most of his life and had been told by physicians in Muskegon and nearby Grand Rapids that he had only a short
life expectancy. His healing followed Christian Science prayerful treatment by a woman who moved to Muskegon after attending classes with Mary Baker Eddy in Boston. Mr. Tillotson and his wife, Sarah, hosted in their home the first of several classes of instruction in Christian Science held in Muskegon homes until 1898 when Christian Science Society of Muskegon was formed. The group grew in numbers and on January 15, 1901, they became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Muskegon. Services were held in the Muskegon Woman’s Club until May 3, 1931, when a new church building was completed for them on property that was donated to them by the president of Continental Motors in Muskegon. An Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ was installed in 1948 and the completed building was dedicated debt-free on December 10, 1950. Services were held at that location until December 2009 when it was deemed impractical.
The current building, the former Chamber of Commerce Building for Muskegon, was purchased and remodeled for our specific use. The building includes a special wing for our Reading Room, as well as another wing for Sunday School and child-care. Services have continued at that location since June 2013.
